Junghans Finishes 2007-08 as Nation's Top Free Throw Shooter


FREDERICK, Md.--Junior guard Ryan Junghans of the Hood College men's basketball team finished the 2007-08 season as the NCAA Division III leader in free throw percentage.

Junghans, a 5-10 shooting guard from Derwood, Md., went 118-123 from the foul line for a 95.9 free throw percentage, eclipsing runner-up Ryan Miller of Moravian (94.9) by 1.8 percent. At one point in mid-February, Junghans led all three Divisions in foul shooting.

Over the past three seasons, Junghans has compiled a free throw percentage of 91.9 – a career record at Hood. This season, the two-time All-Capital Athletic Conference First Team selection led the Blazers in scoring with 20.0 points per game and became the third Hood player to reach 1,000 career points. He stands third all-time in the Hood annals with 1,096 career points.

Junghans also paced the team in steals (36), three-point percentage (.450), three-point attempts (149), three-pointers made (67), field goal attempts (348) and field goals made (168). He also set the school record for points scored in a single game this season with 47 in a double-overtime victory over Gallaudet on Feb. 2, and sank a school-best nine triples at Marymount (Va.) on Jan. 9.

The Blazers (15-11, 9-7 CAC) finished the 2007-08 campaign ranked in the top 20 in the nation in free throw percentage (75.7) and led the Capital Athletic Conference in that category as well.
