Oconis Earns Academic All-District Honors


FREDERICK, Md.--Junior attack Will Oconis of the Hood College men's lacrosse team has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Men's At-Large Second Team, as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A business major from Baltimore, Md., Oconis was one of 11 student-athletes in the district (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia) to earn this prestigious distinction.

He started all 15 games for the Blazers last spring and tied for the team lead with 22 points. Oconis recorded two hat tricks on the year and finished with 10 goals, ranking him second on the squad. He also set a school record with 12 assists. A solid all-around player, Oconis listed third on the team in ground balls with 46 and won 73-of-199 face-offs for the Blazers. He is Hood's career leader in points (35), assists (14), ground balls (113) and face-offs won (121) and lists second all-time in career goals with 21.

To be nominated for this honor, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. The academic all-district at-large squads are comprised of student-athletes from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
