Hood Has Six Different Scorers in 11-0 Victory over Bryn Athyn
FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College men's lacrosse team (2-6) used a balanced scoring attack to down Bryn Athyn (1-1) 11-0 at Thomas Athletic Field Saturday afternoon. Six different Blazers found the back of the net in a game that Hood dominated from beginning to end.
Junior Mike Higgs scored three goals on the afternoon to bring his season total to seven. The attacker found openings in the Bryn Athyn defense and was lethal with his shots around the goal. Higgs also corralled six groundballs and caused two Lion turnovers in a very sufficient outing from the junior.
Junior midfielder Randolph Clark also had a very stellar game scoring two goals and assisting on three others to give him five points in the contest. Clark also paced the Blazers in groundballs with 14 to his name, while also winning nine of his 11 faceoff attempts. Clark's distribution and attacking prowess was on full display all game and allowed the Blazers to be flexible and affective in their attack.
The Blazers had two other players in midfielder Adam Patterson and attacker Chris Wilbur who each scored two goals. Patterson played an end to end game from the midfield position and was responsible for two Bryn Athyn turnovers, while also grabbing six groundballs. Wilbur was the catalyst for a nice goal in the third period, as the sophomore had great vision in seeing a cutting Clark, who finished past the Bryn Athyn goalkeeper. The assist was Wilbur's fifth of the campaign. Freshman Cody Mai and sophomore Brandon McCormick rounded out the scoring for Hood with a goal apiece.
Credit also needs to go to the Blazer defense, who had a flawless display all afternoon. Sophomore James Weger constantly thwarted Bryn Athyn attacks and had six caused turnovers on the afternoon. Weger also had five groundballs, while fellow defender George Grambell had two caused turnovers and two groundballs.
Junior goalkeeper John Martin had a very adequate game between the pipes with five saves, while pitching the first shutout of the season for Hood. Martin also grabbed three groundballs and was very accurate with his clearances. Bryn Athyn goalkeeper Matt Bartalini made 13 saves in defeat, while Nelson Lopez came in for the last quarter and contributed three saves.
Hood will return to action this Thursday when they host UMass.-Boston at Thomas Athletic Field. The game will begin at 4 p.m.
