Blazers Fall on Senior Day to Alvernia, 9-3
FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College men's lacrosse team (3-12, 0-6 Commonwealth) was defeated by Alvernia University (5-9, 1-4 Commonwealth) 9-3 at Thomas Athletic Field Saturday afternoon. On a day when Hood honored their six seniors for Senior Day, the Blazers played a valiant game and dominated in numerous statistical categories, however the Crusaders used a solid second and third period to pull away and take the victory.
Senior attacker Alex Engler continued his adequate run of form as he scored his sixth goal of the season to give him a team leading 17 points for the campaign. Engler also had two groundballs and a caused turnover to give him a very solid outing on Senior Day.
Freshman Zachary Speights was the first Blazer scorer of the afternoon with a tally in the first period to tie the game at one apiece. Alvernia answered with three unanswered goals until Engler's strike took the two sides into halftime with the score at 4-2 in favor of the Crusaders.
Out of the break junior Billy Larrimore scored his second goal of the season to bring the crowd at Thomas Athletic Field to life with the score at 4-3. However, Alvernia withstood the onslaught with five unanswered goals. Leading the way was Jared Toll, who netted three goals in the stretch, while Brian Ray tallied the other two.
In the game Hood dominated in total shots with a 45-32 advantage. The Blazers also held a considerable advantage in groundballs with 49 to the Crusaders 31. Junior Randolph Clark was a big reason for that as he snatched a game high 11 groundballs and won 12 of his 14 faceoff attempts.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joseph McCulloh made nine saves in defeat, including some very good leg saves to keep Hood alive. Alvernia goalkeeper Brandon Weaver may have been the man of the match as he continuously made save after save to keep the Hood attack at bay. Weaver picked up the victory and was credited with a staggering 16 saves on the afternoon.
Hood has the week off and will return to action next Saturday when they take on Lycoming College in the squad's final away game of the season. The game will begin at approximately 1 p.m.
