FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College dropped a non-conference match to visiting Salve Regina, 18-8.
Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) had three goals and an assist to lead the Blazers. Randolph Clark (Chesapeake Beach, Md. / Northern) and Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley) each scored twice. Clark also won 15-of-22 face offs and had 14 ground balls.
Hood (1-3) trailed just 4-0 before the Seahawks scored four goals in the final two minutes of the first half to make it 8-0 at the break.
Salve Regina (5-0) added six more goals to open the second half before the Blazer offense found its legs. Villegas scored with 6:34 to play, but Curtis McKeon won the ensuing face off for the Seahawks and stretched the lead back to 14.
O'Brien's first goal came with just over a minute left in the third and started a five-goal run for Hood. The Blazers opened the fourth with four consecutive man up goals. Chris Wilbur (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) was on the receiving end of a Villegas assist with 12:52 to play to open the scoring in the period. After O'Brien's second goal, Hood scored twice in a span of eight seconds. Villegas found the back of the net at 10:45 and Clark won the next face off and went straight in to make it 15-6.
The teams traded goals before Clark pulled the feat again with 3:54 to play. After Seahawk tally, he scooped the face off and went in for his second goal of the afternoon just six seconds later.
Sharp Jones led Salve Regina with five goals and Nick LoCicero added two goals and five assists.
John Martin (Thornton, Pa. / Garnet Valley) and Joseph McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) split time in goal for Hood. Martin stopped five shots in the first half, while McCulloh made seven saves over the remainder of the contest.
The Seahawks also used multiple goalies. Andrew Watkins opened the game and made six saves in 41 minutes, with Brian Farina notching the same number of saves in the final 19 minutes of play.
The Blazers won 15-of-26 face offs in the game. Salve Regina held a significant edge in ground balls, 52-38.
Both squads were successful in extra man opportunities. Hood was 5-of-8, with the Seahawks converting one less in as many attempts.
The Blazers travel to Gwynedd-Mercy on March 15 for a 12 p.m. match.
