Hood Stopped by Messiah
GRANTHAM, Pa. - A big first quarter by Messiah proved too much for Hood to overcome in a 12-2 loss in Commonwealth Conference men's lacrosse.
The Falcons came out of the gate and scored seven goals in the first quarter.The Blazer defense tightened and held them to only five over the final 45 minutes, but the early deficit proved to be the difference.
Andrew Harris, Chris Bry, and Will Franken each scored twice in the first quarter as Messiah built its lead.
Hood rebounded to shut out the Falcons in the second period and began to chip away at the deficit. Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) got the Blazers on the board with 5:16 left in the half. With 1:11 to play in the second quarter, Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahhou) received a pass from Nick Druelinger (Joppa, Md. / John Carroll) and sent it home for a 7-2 score at the half.
After holding the Falcons off the scoreboard for over 19 minutes from closing minutes of the first quarter into the beginning of the third period, Braden Olson started a 5-0 run that Hood was unable to counter.
James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Randolph Clark (Chesapeake Beach, Md. / Northern) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Dan Jacobs (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough) also caused three miscues and Brett Humphreys (Newark, Del. / Sanford) had four ground balls.
Zach Kauffman (Lancaster, Pa. / Garden Spot) won 4-of-6 faceoffs.
Joseph McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) stopped seven shots over the final 50 minutes in relief.
Franken led all players with four goals scored. Nate Nester and Ryan Mayer had three assists apiece.
Brooks Arnold played the first 48 minutes in goal and made eight saves.
Hood's defense did not surrender a man up opportunity during the game. The two squads split 18 face offs.
The Blazers travel to Widener on March 29 at 7 p.m.
