Tennis Teams Sweep Lincoln

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood men's and women's tennis teams posted easy wins over visiting Lincoln University Tuesday afternoon.

The Blazer men turned in a 9-0 shutout to improve to 2-3 on the year, while the women claimed a 7-2 victory to even their mark at 3-3.

The Hood men started the afternoon by sweeping the three doubles matches with little trouble.

Moga Nkate and Tyler Dixon were 8-2 winners over Clyde Ledbetter and Marquess Schell at No. 1, Colin Reitman and Greg Schinner followed with an 8-2 defeat of Antwan Graham and Brandon McLaren at No. 2 and Nick Gunter and Carlos Funes added an 8-1 win over Jonathan Ponder and Chad Long at No. 3.

The Blazers continued their solid play in singles action.

Reitman got past Ledbetter 8-3 at the top flight, while Nkate held off Graham 9-7 at the second spot. Dixon downed Schell 8-3 at No. 3 and Schinner got past McLaren 8-5 at No. 4. Funes and Gunther then closed out the sweep with 8-1 victories at the final two flights.

On the women's side, Hood got off to a strong start with wins in all three doubles matches.

Casey Bunchman and Stephanie Cowen picked up an 8-4 win over Shawnelly Francis and Sharrell Howell at No. 1, and Amellis Peart and Larisa Buriak added an 8-5 victory against Alisa Davis and Marchelle Hall at No. 2. The Blazers won the third flight by default.

In singles play, Christine Ocampos-Barry blanked Francis 8-0 at No. 1 and Laura Wanner followed with an 8-4 win against Davis at No. 2.

Lincoln posted wins at the Nos. 3 and 4 flights, with Howell getting past Nicole DeMambro 8-5 and Hall downing Rukondo Kambarewi 8-3.

Hood won the final two flights by default.

The Blazer women are back in action tomorrow when they visit College of Notre Dame in an Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference match at 3 p.m.

The Hood men return to courts in a pair of matches Saturday at Shepherd University. The Blazers face Shepherd at 11 a.m. and then take on Bluefield State at 2 p.m.
