Softball Blanks Wells, Wilson, to Advance to AWCC Championship Game
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.--Sophomore Jamie Gardner pitched a pair of
complete game shutouts, fanning 24 batters and scattering just
seven hits over 14 innings, to propel the Hood College softball
team to the championship game of the Atlantic Women's Colleges
Conference tournament.
The top-seeded Blazers (13-19) will battle either Wilson College or
Mary Baldwin College in the championship game Sunday at noon in
Chambersburg. The winner of the four-team tournament earns an
automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.
After a scoreless first inning against Wells in the opener, the
Blazers threatened in the bottom of the second when they loaded the
bases. Jess Krietz doubled with one out but was picked off at
second. Stephanie Gardner then reached on a Wells fielding error,
Jen Guyer singled and Ashley Lenhart walked to load the bases with
two outs. But leadoff hitter Sara Wastler grounded out to second to
end the threat.
Hood got on the board in the bottom of the third on a two-run
single by Krietz which scored Chrissy Harvey and Kara Robert. The
Blazers tacked on two more runs in the fourth as a result of a
critical fielding error by the leftfielder.
Gardner retired 12 of the first 13 batters she faced before Bethany
Cereo singled to lead off the fifth for Wells' first basehit of the
contest. But she got Kayleen Wilkinson to ground into a double play
and she struck out Alaire Alghali for the final out of the inning.
Hood capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when Wastler
drove in Katherine Law who led off the inning with a single.
Gardner allowed just two hits and struck out 12 batters en route to
her fourth shutout of the spring. The Express were plagued by seven
miscues in the field.
In the semifinal game against the host Phoenix, Gardner continued
her dominance in the circle, striking out 12 hitters for the second
straight game and surrendering just five hits.
Hood took a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by Robert which plated
Wastler. The Blazers then broke the game wide open in the bottom of
the fourth despite collecting just one basehit. Wilson committed
three errors in the frame which led to four Blazer runs, giving
Hood a 5-0 lead.
Krietz scored Hood's sixth run of the ballgame on an RBI-groundout
by Gardner in the fifth. Then in the sixth, Tamara Maggard took one
for the team and was hit by a Cheryl Taylor pitch with the bases
loaded which brought around Robert to round out the scoring for
Hood.
Mary Baldwin and Wilson will square off in an elimination game at
10 a.m. Sunday. The winner will face Hood for the championship at
noon.
