Softball Wins CAC Debut, 2-1, Over Wesley

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (2-4, 1-1 CAC) put together another seventh-inning rally to come from behind and defeat the Wesley College Wolverines (1-3, 1-1 CAC) by a 2-1 margin Tuesday in the first game of the Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader.
In their CAC debut, the Blazers and Wolverines battled through six scoreless innings before Wesley broke through with an unearned run in the top of the seventh. Marie Elzey singled to start things off and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lyndsey Ellsworth reached on a Blazer fielding error to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Jess Morgan then hit a groundball to shortstop Sara Wastler who fielded it and fired home to cut down Elzey at the plate.
Next up was Kelly Caton who laced a run-scoring single to the left side which plated Ellsworth for the first run of the ballgame. Shirelle Tingle then bunted her way on to load the bases with one out. The Blazer defense was able to thwart another Wolverine scoring chance when Megan Street grounded one to second baseman Katherine Law, who fired home to Steph Gardner to nail Morgan at home. Jamie Gardner then retired Sue Goines on strikes to escape further damage.
In the bottom of the seventh, third baseman Kate Hassell and leftfielder Sam Smith started the inning with back-to-back singles. Tiera Hawkes came in to run for Hassell at second base. Rightfielder Jen Lacy reached on a fielding error by Morgan to load the bases with no outs. Leadoff hitter Law stepped in and blooped a basehit into short left field which drove in Hawkes and Smith for the truimphant walk-off victory.
Jamie Gardner picked up the victory allowing one unearned run and collecting eight strikeouts. Ashley Lenhart went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to lead the Blazer offense.
In the nightcap, the Wolverines capitalized on five Blazer miscues to pick up their first victory of the spring. Ellsworth lined a run-scoring single through the left side to plate Kait Mann for Wesley's first run of the game in the top of the third. The Wolverines tacked on another run in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single by Brandy Winhauer. Hood got one back in the bottom of the sixth on a double to the gap in left center by Steph Gardner which scored Wastler from first.
The Wolverines scored three runs in the top of the seventh on just two basehits but took advantage of three Blazer fielding errors. Caton drilled a two-out two-run single down the leftfield line to cap the rally.
Forced to play catch-up yet again, the Blazers would not give up. Jen Willison drew a one-out walk and Smith singled through the right side. After Law reached on a fielder's choice to Tingle forcing Smith at second, Lenhart then singled to right to score Willison from third and cut the deficit to 5-2. Sara Wastler came to the plate as the potential tying run but Lenhart was picked off at first for the final out of the game.
Jess Morgan earned the complete game victory for Wesley, allowing seven hits and picking up six strikeouts. Erica Hamor saw her first action in the circle for the Blazers and pitched four innings while allowing four unearned runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Hood next hosts Mt. Aloysius College at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the second of three home doubleheaders this week.
