Late Rally Propels Wesley to 6-2 Win over Hood in CAC Softball Tourney

FREDERICK, Md.--Lyndsey Ellsworth and Megan Street both homered in the top of the seventh inning to lift the fifth-seeded Wesley College Wolverines (7-22) to a 6-2 victory over the fourth-seeded Hood College softball team (15-12) Tuesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.
After two scoreless innings, the Wolverines scored three runs on four basehits and two Hood fielding errors to take an early 3-0 lead. After Sue Goines struck out to lead off the top of the third, leadoff hitter Ellsworth reached on a fielding error by pitcher Jamie Gardner. Michele Mules and Kelly Caton laced back-to-back singles to load the bases for cleanup hitter Megan Street.
Steph Gardner attempted to pick off Ellsworth at third but her throw sailed into foul territory, allowing each baserunner to move up and Ellsworth to score the first run of the ballgame. Street then poked a single through the left side to plate Mules. Jessica Morgan then followed with Wesley's fourth straight basehit, a double to centerfield, which drove in Caton to stake the visitors to a 3-0 lead. Gardner retired Marie Elzey on a foul out to Jen Lacy and Shirelle Tingle on a groundout to Sara Wastler at short.
Hood got one back in the bottom of the frame. Wastler lined a two-out single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Morgan. She then proceeded to steal third and came in to score on a throwing error by leftfielder Mules.
After Gardner retired all three batters she faced in the top of the fourth, the Blazers cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double by Alecia Weddle which drove in Jen Willison.
Neither team scored in the fifth or sixth innings, but the Wolverines used the longball to pad their lead in the top of the seventh. As a team, Wesley came into the game with just two homeruns its first 28 games combined. After Goines popped up to Wastler for the first out of the seventh, Ellsworth belted a solo shot over the leftfield fence and Street cranked a two-run blast to straight away center to stretch the Wolverine lead to 6-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Katherine Law ripped a two-out double to leftcenter but was stranded at second after Wastler grounded out to Morgan to end the rally.
Gardner took the loss, tossing a complete game while surrendering six runs (four earned) with three strikeouts and two walks. Morgan earned the win and struck out eight Blazer hitters along the way.
Hood will now face No. 2 York College (Pa.) Saturday at 10 a.m. at Salisbury University.
