Paugh pitches, hits Hood to sweep at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - The Hood College softball team swept Widener to earn the fourth-seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Championships. the Blazers won game one 2-0 and came from behind to claim game two 6-5.

Kayli Paugh pitched a four-hit shutout in the opener and hit a grand slam to score the winning runs in the top of the seventh in the nightcap. Kristy Erfurdt had two hits in both games.

Hood 2, Widener 0 

  • Erfurdt scored Hood's first run and drove in the second, which proved to be more than enough support for Paugh. 
  • Erfurdt singled with one out and scored from second on a base hit by Paugh for a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Blazers added a run in the third when Caitlin Gosline doubled and scored on a base hit by Erfurdt. 
  • Paugh, meanwhile, allowed just four hits and a walk, retiring the final six hitters she faced. 
  • Gosline and Erfurdt had two hits apiece. 
  • Katie Rabuck took the loss. She allowed two runs on seven hits. 

Hood 6, Widener 5

  • The Blazers scored five runs in the top of the seven, capped by Paugh's grand slam for the comeback win. 
  • Trailing 5-1, Katelyn Long led off the seventh with a single. After Maddy Collins walked, Gosline bunted the duo into scoring position. Long cut the deficit to three on a passed ball. Kristen Scott walked and an infield single by Erfurdt loaded the bases. Paugh hit a two-out grand slam, her sixth home run of the year, to put the Blazers ahead. 
  • Sophia Leaman closed out the complete game win with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. 
  • Hood's other run scored in the first on a wild pitch. 
  • A two-run single by Katie Sterling put the Pride ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first. In the third, Lauren DelRomano hit a two-run homer to make it 4-1 and Sterling stretched the lead to four in the fifth with an RBI double. 
  • Leaman picked up the win. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. Four of the five runs she allowed were earned. 
  • Hood had just six hits, two by Erfurdt, but drew five walks. Scott walked twice. 
  • Bella Bottini took the loss. She was charged with all six runs in 6.2 innings. 

Notes

  • Hood is 18-16 on the year and finishes 9-7 in the MAC Commonwealth.
  • Widener is 13-15 and 8-8.
