Blazer Women Come Up Short Against Wesley, 72-64

FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Jen Willison of the Hood College women's basketball team (4-18, 2-12 CAC) registered her sixth double-double of the season with game-highs of 21 points and 17 rebounds in a 72-64 loss to the Wesley College Wolverines (12-11, 8-6 CAC) Monday in a Capital Athletic Conference game.

Wesley opened up a 15-point lead midway through the first half but the Blazers gradually shaved that deficit down to single digits and by the end of the stanza were within one possession of drawing even. A Whitney Schultheis layup at the 1:23 mark brought the Blazers to within 34-31, which would be the narrow lead the Wolverines carried into the lockerroom.

Hood shot 41.9 percent from the floor in the first half but the Wolverines, the league's leading three-point shooting squad, connected on six long-range buckets to maintain the upperhand.

Wesley once again built their advantage up to double figures, using an 8-1 spurt to go up 46-36 at the 13:24 mark. But the Blazers wouldn't go away, closing to within one on a pair of foul shots by Christi Valdez which made it 52-51 with 7:26 to play in regulation. Hood was unable to retake the lead however and the Wolverines escaped with the victory. Hood connected on just 4-of-12 from the field down the stretch.

Willison led all scorers with 21 points, including 9-of-14 from the foul line. Nine of her game-high 17 rebounds were on the offensive glass, as she continues to lead the conference in that category. Allyson Lethbridge tallied 16 points and four assists while Jessica Parrish contributed 11 points and three assists. Schultheis and Brianna Raithel netted seven points apiece and Valdez chipped in a pair and grabbed five boards.

Hood outrebounded Wesley by 20 (51-31) and canned 17-of-24 from the charity stripe.

Colleen Thomas led three Wolverines in double figures with 19 points on 9-of-15 from the field.

The Blazers next travel to Villa Julie College Wednesday for a 6 p.m. CAC game.
