Hesterberg Adds Eight to 2009 Roster

FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College women's lacrosse coach Molly Hesterberg announced the addition of eight newcomers to her 2009 roster.

Midfielders Kati Vu and Maria Moss, defender Julia Banks, attacks Kimberly Blocker and Danielle Samsingh and goalkeepers Lindsey Schreiber, Helene Butler and Samantha Liptrap will all don the blue and gray this fall for the Blazer lacrosse squad.

Vu comes to Hood from Kenwood High School in Baltimore and scored 32 goals for the division champion Bluebirds. Moss lettered all four years in varsity lacrosse at nearby Brunswick High School and was named the team's most valuable player as a sophomore and senior.

"Kati and Maria are going to add depth to our midfield," said Hesterberg. "They are strong aggressive players that can run both sides of the field. They have a tremendous amount of speed and stick skills."

Banks attended Francis Scott Key High School and garnered all-county accolades her senior year.

"Julia is a very smart defender who will be a huge contributor to our defensive unit," said Hesterberg. "She is a very vocal player and isn't scared of her opponents. She has only played four years of lacrosse and has grown into an amazing player."

Blocker was a three-sport athlete at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C., who also lettered in soccer and basketball. An honor roll member, Blocker was also named a National Honor Society scholar and was ranked in the top 15 in her class.

"Kimberly is a hardworking athlete and a very coachable player," said Hesterberg. "She will join our attack as she has a hard shot and will be able to stand up against her defenders. We need her type of aggressiveness on our attack side.

"Danielle will also see time as an attack player. She is a hardworking student-athlete who is eager to improve her skills."

A trio of goalie recruits will vie for the starting spot vacated by four-year starter Lauren Lieb. Butler, the daughter of Hood women's basketball coach Jay Butler, attended Scituate High School in Rhode Island made 225 saves last season. Schreiber is a graduate of Pine-Richland High School in Gibsonia, Pa., who started in goal as a junior and senior. Liptrap, who will also play field hockey for Hood, earned most valuable player accolades at Kenwood High School her freshman and sophomore years.

"Lindsey, Helene and Samantha are all very athletic," said Hesterberg. "I am very excited to have them aboard.

"Lindsey is very smart with clearing the ball. When needed she is able to clear the ball up the field past her defenders into the midfield. She has made a lot of saves in her high school career and I believe that will carry over for her as a Blazer.

"Helene is a tall and solid lacrosse player who can not only play the goal but has played the field as well. I am happy that she is such a versatile player. She gives us depth across the field and is going to be a huge asset to our squad. She is capable of doing big things both in the goal and on the attack unit.

"Samantha is also another experienced goalie who has great skills. She communicates well with her defense and is aggressive in the crease as well as outside her crease. She is a tough young lady who will bring a lot to our program.

"As a whole this recruiting class is a huge addition to our small squad. We have recruits looking at spots all over the field and not just in one or two positions. All eight recruits are very athletic and coachable young ladies. I believe they will help increase our program and help us compete in the Capital Athletic Conference. I am very excited that they chose to become student-athletes for Hood College."
