Sandra Abel enters her first season as an assistant coach for the women’s lacrosse team.

Hailing from Urbana High School in Monrovia, Md., Abel graduated from Rutgers University last spring with a degree in women and gender studies with a minor in psychology.

A goalkeeper at Rutgers, she started all 16 games between the pipes last season and racked up 144 saves for a .460 save percentage while logging 955:32 minutes. She went 7-9 on the season and owned a 10.24 goals-against average, fourth in the Big East.

Abel was named to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team her junior year and finished the season with career-highs in saves (163), save percentage (.477) and wins (seven).

Abel also finished second in the BIG EAST and 19th nationally in save percentage and saves per game. Abel recorded 10 or more saves in 10 games including five straight. She was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Week on March 3, 2008 and was voted to the 2008 Preseason all-Big East team.

In 2007, Abel played in 16 games, starting 11, and finished with a 4-0 record. She ranked seventh in the conference in goals-against average (10.32) and saves per game (4.19) and ranked eighth with a .435 save percentage. She logged a team-high 506 minutes during the season.

A starter in 11 of the 14 games she appeared in as a freshman, Abel finished the season seventh overall in the league in save percentage (.463). She averaged a team-best 11.53 goals-against average and finished with a record of 6-5.

Abel started out as an attacker at Urbana before making the switch to netminder as a sophomore. A three-time all-county performer and two-time team captain for the Hawks, she guided the squad to an appearance in the state championship her senior year.

In addition to her coaching duties with the lacrosse program, Abel will assist Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Enrichment Jay Butler with Hood’s study hall and mentoring programs. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in human sciences.
