Women's Soccer Suffers Heartbreaker in OT in Season Opener
FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's soccer team (0-1) overcame a 3-1 second-half deficit, scoring two goals in the final 20:28, only to come up short in overtime, 4-3, to the King's College Lady Monarchs Saturday in the opening round of the Kim Servedio Women's Soccer Tournament at Thomas Athletic Field.
Each squad registered a single tally in the first half, as freshman Becky Chateauneuf scored the first goal of the contest at the 10:33 mark on a breakaway. Hood responded a little more than seven minutes later when sophomore midfielder Cara Jordan netted the first of her two scores on the day off a pass from junior Nikki Antalffy.
In the second half, King's notched a pair of scores less than 10 minutes apart when Chateauneuf and Megan Inama both found the back of the net to give the visitors a 3-1 cushion with 30:15 remaining.
The Blazers countered once again as Jordan took a feed from freshman Carlie Colella for her second goal of the day and ninth of her Hood career to make it 3-2 with 20:28 remaining in regulation. Then, in the 84th minute, Colella set up classmate Jessica Devine with a perfect corner kick for the equalizer.
Hood had four chances in the overtime session but Lady Monarch keeper Sara Ciarlo made three of her 12 saves in that extra period. Sophomore forward Alison Beck sent a through ball ahead to Chateauneuf in the box who beat reserve keeper Kirsten Cacciola for the golden goal for King's in the 99th minute.
The Blazers outshot the Lady Monarchs 20-16 and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Rachelle Buhrman made the start in the net and played the entire first half, turning away six shots. In her first game in the blue and gray, Cacciola took the tough loss, allowing three goals while making three stops in 53:56 of action.
In the first game of the tournament, Mississippi College overwhelmed McDaniel College, 3-0, to advance to the championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. King's. The Choctaws owned a 26-3 advantage in shots on the day. Mississippi got a pair of goals from Kimberly Kaim and one from Heather Roberson, all in the first half. McDaniel will take on Hood in the consolation game at 10:30 a.m.
