Paul Wood took over the reigns of the Hood women’s soccer program at the start of the 2009 campaign.

Wood joined the Blazer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant when his wife, Jen, was hired as Hood’s head coach prior to the start of the 2006 season. The husband-and-wife tandem served as co-head coaches in 2008, guiding the Blazers to one of the most successful seasons in program history.

Hood finished the 2008 campaign with a record of 10-8-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, a feat never before accomplished by a Hood women’s athletic team. The sixth-seeded Blazers outlasted the third-seeded Stevenson University Mustangs, 3-1, in a shootout after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in the quarterfinal matchup. The program also garnered its first-ever all-CAC citation when Jennifer Fischer, a freshman defender, was named to the 2008 all-league second team.

In 2009, Hood posted a mark of 8-7-1 but did not qualify for the CAC tournament after going 2-6 in league contests.

A native of Petersfield, England, Wood played professionally for the Southampton club from 1980-84 and the Petersfield United semi-pro club from 1984-94. He came to the United States in 1994 to serve as an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s University, a position he held for three years. He was promoted to head coach and mentored the Mount for the next 10 seasons before joining the Hood staff in 2006. Wood was also affiliated with the Mark Mettrick Soccer School, a camp comprised of nearly 900 youth soccer players held on the Mount’s campus. In addition, Wood served as the club coach for FC Frederick (formerly Frederick United).

Wood is a 1984 graduate of Churcher’s College in Petersfield with degrees in history and economics. The Woods reside in Hagerstown, Md., and are the parents of three sons, Billy, Owen and Maddox.
