Notre Dame Nips Hood for AWCC Tennis Title

BALTIMORE, Md.--The Hood College women's tennis team crowned two singles champions and claimed two doubles titles but came up short in the team standings at the 2007 Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference tournament Sunday.
The Blazers held a slim two-point advantage after the doubles competition. Laura Wanner and Christine Ocampos-Barry defeated Dame's Marie Claire Santiago and Roxana Beyranvand 10-3 to capture the No. 2 doubles title and Stephanie Garrett and Caitlin Erickson earned a hard-fought 10-8 victory over Allison Najewicz and Yorie Watanabe for the No. 3 doubles championship. Dame's No. 1 doubles duo of Miku White and Meryl Kirch upended Larisa Buriak and Dani Hunt, 10-3.
In singles action, Garrett bested Santiago, 7-5, 6-1, to claim the No. 3 singles crown, while Hunt downed Dame's Ali Phillips, 7-5, 6-0, for the sixth singles championship.
But the Gators captured the other four singles flights to secure a slim five-point advantage in the team competition.
Additionally, five Blazers were recognized on the All-AWCC First Team: Erickson, Garrett, Hunt, Ocampos-Barry and Wanner. Dame's No. 1 singles champion Mike White earned both the AWCC Newcomer of the Year and Most Outstanding Player awards while head coach Cathy Fisher was tabbed AWCC Coach of the Year.
