Blazers Use Strong Serving to Sweep Trinity

Jamie Gardner

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (1-10) served up 31 aces en route to a 3-0 victory (25-9, 25-4, 25-14) over Trinity University (D.C.) (1-8) Saturday at Gambrill Gymnasium.

Hood's 31 service aces were the third-highest single-match total in program history. Kristina Straub notched her first double-double of the season with 15 assists and 10 service aces. Her 10 aces were three shy of tying the school record of 13 held by Jessica Lertora against Chatham during the 2002 season.

The Blazers hit .302 for the match, a season-high, smacking 23 kills on 43 attempts. Ashley Burns registered a season-high with eight kills to go along with four aces. Jamie Gardner put down four kills, had seven digs and served two aces while Kristan Hawkins also had four kills to go along with three aces. Bailey Runkles collected kills on all three of her attempts and chipped in three digs.

Leah Garland served up seven aces and assisted on two Blazer kills. Megan Heidel registered her first kill in the blue and gray while Katherine Brosius racked up four aces and one dig. Lena Bushrod contributed three digs and an ace and Katie Worthington finished with a kill and an assist.

The Blazers improved to 11-0 all-time versus the Tigers and have now won 33 straight sets against their former rivals from the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference.

Hood hosts the Goucher College Gophers at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
