FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (1-12, 0-5 CAC) put forth a valiant effort against the top team in the Capital Athletic Conference, the Salisbury University Sea Gulls (21-1, 4-0 CAC), falling 3-0 (11-25, 18-25, 6-25) Wednesday evening at Gambrill Gymnasium.
After dropping the first set, 25-11, the Blazers gave the Sea Gulls all they could handle in the second set, going point for point virtually the entire stanza. Midway through the set, the Blazers got back-to-back kills from Jamie Gardner and Ashley Burns to go up 15-13, forcing Salisbury to call timeout. The Sea Gulls responded by scoring the next four points to retake a 17-15 edge but the Blazers remained in striking distance for the next few exchanges. However, clinging to a 21-18 lead, the Sea Gulls scored the final four points of the set and went on to win, 25-18.
In the third set, the Sea Gulls ripped off the first eight points of the frame and never looked back, clinching the match with a 25-6 win.
Chelsea Weaver, Kristina Straub and Burns all tallied four kills apiece while Straub added nine assists and five digs. Weaver and Bushrod keyed the defense with seven digs apiece and Leah Garland served up three aces to go along with four digs and four assists.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday hosting Gallaudet University in a CAC match at 7 p.m.
