Hood Falls to Mary Washington, 3-0

Megan Heidel

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (0-5, 0-1 CAC) suffered a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference defeat (10-25, 14-25, 17-25) at the hands of the visiting University of Mary Washington Eagles (7-3, 1-0 CAC) Wednesday evening at Gambrill Gym.

Hood registered the first two points of the first set on an ace by Brittany Tribett and blocks by Kristan Hawkins and Ashley Burns. But the Eagles rallied to outscore the Blazers 10-1 to assume a 10-3 lead. Anne Lutkenhaus put down three kills in the spurt. Hood took advantage of an Eagle serving error to trim the deficit to 14-7, but would get no closer as UMW went on to take the first set, 25-10.

Hood once again started strong in the second set, using an ace by Burns and a pair of UMW miscues to post the first three points of the frame. The two squads exchanged points over the next several rallies before the Eagles snagged a 9-8 edge on a Meghan Graham kill. Mary Washington would not lose that lead the rest of the set as it was Graham again who put down the set-clinching kill for the guests.

The Eagles never trailed in set number three. A pair of Eagle attack errors drew the Blazers to within 12-7 midway through the stanza, but UMW ripped off seven straight points, including four consecutive aces by Karissa Herrick, to extend its lead to 19-7. Hood staved off four match points but, following an Eagle timeout, Lutkenhaus connected on the match-clinching kill, her 19th of the night, to give the Eagles their first CAC win of the season.

Hood's Chelsea Weaver finished with 14 digs while Kristina Straub, Brittany Lethbridge and Leah Garland all collected a pair of kills. Brittany Tribett tallied six assists and Burns registered eight digs.

The Blazers next travel to Catholic University for a quad match Saturday. Hood will face Marymount University at 10 a.m., Catholic at noon and Trinity University (D.C.) at 2 p.m.
