Volleyball Stumbles on First Day of East. Mennonite Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Hood College's Elena Zinaich turned in back-to-back 18-kill performances, but the Blazers were outlasted by Bridgewater, 3-2, and Catholic, 3-1. 

The sophomore finished the day with 36 total kills and seven blocks. Classmate Payton Belella handed out 74 assists between the two matches, including 38 against Catholic. Kelsey Ritner had 19 digs against Bridgewater and added 13 more against the the Cardinals. 

Hood opened the day against the Eagles. After dropping the first two sets, the Blazers rebounded to force a fifth set. Bridgewater, however, regrouped for a 25-16, 25-15, 17-25, 23-25, 15-7 victory. In the nightcap against Catholic, Hood fell 25-13, 23-25, 25-15, 25-23. 

Kari Betson had a double-double in the opener with 11 kills and 18 digs. Caroline Kinna added 10 kills, while Gabriela Enriquez finished with 14 digs. Belella accumulated 36 assists. 

Abby Mills led the Eagles with 11 kills. Macon Fry tallied a match-high 23 digs. 

Against Catholic, Courtney Hutchinson teamed with Zinaich to give the Blazers a strong presence in the middle, finishing with 10 kills. Kinna led the team with 17 digs. 

Kathryn Herrington paced the Cardinals with 13 kills. Michelle Seals tallied 37 assists, while Michelle Bouchard added 21 digs. 

Hood wraps up play at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational on the morning of Saturday, September 3, with matches against Mary Baldwin at 10 a.m. and Lynchburg at 12 p.m.
