Women's Cross Country Finishes Ninth at Don Cathcart Invite

Sam Smith

SALISBURY, Md.--Senior Jessica Stanley paced seven members of the Hood College women's cross country team at the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury University at Winter Park Place Saturday.

Stanley completed the 5920-meter course in 25:45, good for 55th place out of 108 competitors. Her time was the 19th-fastest in program history.

"It speaks volumes about how strong Jess is this year that she can improve on a personal best by 46 seconds and still not have a great day," said head coach Brent Ayer.

Sophomore Joanna LaBoue was the second Blazer to cross the tape in 26:20. She passed through the 5,000-meter mark 12 seconds faster than she had previously ran that distance and continued on for the additional 1,000 meters. Sophomore Maria Moss was 30 seconds behind LaBoue and set a personal record by 24 seconds.

Senior Emily Brownlee, freshman Erica Burgess and junior Sam Smith all finished within 50 seconds of one another and all below the 30-minute barrier. Brownlee's time bested her personal record by a gaudy seven minutes. Smith carved 42 seconds off her personal best. Junior Kristina Coggins rounded out the Blazer contingent with a time of 35:24 in her first 6,000-meter race.

"Sam, Erica and Jess were a bit under the weather, but still gave exceptional efforts. The marks speak to a very fast course, but also to us getting smarter and stronger," said Ayer.

"The next three meets are the ones I care about and we are hosting them all, including the CAC Championship," Ayer continued. "If we can get everyone healthy and on the same page, we can move up some slots."

The Blazers finished ninth out of 12 complete teams. John Carroll won the meet, finishing eight points ahead of runner-up East Stroundsburg University. JCU's Ashley Aberl led the field with a time of 22:14.

Hood has three weeks off to prepare for its own Open Meet at Heritage Farm Park in Walkersville, Md., Oct. 17 at 11 a.m.
