FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (1-1) made
history Tuesday, earning the program's first victory in 48 games
dating back to its inception in 2005, by defeating the visiting
Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins, 12-7, at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Blazers' 12 goals are the most in program history, eclipsing
the previous record of 10 set last season against Shenandoah, and
its seven goals allowed were a program low, besting the previous
record of nine set twice (vs. Christopher Newport Apr. 2, 2008 and
vs. DeSales March 9, 2007).
Kris Miner got the Blazers on the board 5:30 into the contest
with an unassisted score. Jonathan Scmitt then countered three
minutes later with a goal off a pass from Nicholas Coan. The
Blazers netted five of the game's next six goals by five different
players and Hood led 6-2 at halftime.
After Steven Miner cut the deficit in half just 47 seconds into
the third quarter, Hood reeled off four straight tallies to assume
a commanding 10-3 lead with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
But the Griffins didn't quit and rallied for four fourth-quarter
scores, including two scores by Miner just seven seconds apart, to
close to within 11-7 with 5:25 to play. But Corey Roberts notched
his second goal of the afternoon with 1:10 left for the final
margin.
Junior Sofiane Lazar registered a hat trick for the Blazers
while Nick Spicer and Roberts each netted a pair. Miner, Michael
Matteson, Dominique Shorter, Troy Hubbard and John Butterfield all
got into the scoring column for Hood.
Hood's Hector Montoya won 17-of-23 faceoffs for the Blazers and
sophomore goalkeeper Nick O'Brien made a career-high 14 saves in
the triumph.
Hood returns to action Friday at Shenandoah University. Face-off
is set for 7 p.m.
