WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Hood College men's and women's swim teams
split with the Catholic University Cardinals and the Gallaudet
University Bison in a Capital Athletic Conference double dual
Saturday at Catholic.
The Blazer men (3-6, 2-6 CAC) lost to Catholic, 64-31 and
defeated Gallaudet 54-41, while the women (5-9, 2-6 CAC) suffered a
68-27 setback to the Cardinals but triumphed over the Bison, 54-41.
On the women's side, Amy Kaufman won two individual events and
Katie Hitchens won a third for the Blazers. Kaufman won the 1000
free in a season-best time of 11:29.82 and touched out Catholic's
Helene Nicolette in the 200 individual medley in another season-low
time of 2:27.60. Kaufman was also second in the 100 back (1:09.90).
Hitchens bested the field in her signature event, the 50 free, in
26.92, nipping Liz McGinn of Catholilc by 0.07 seconds.
Erica Hamor placed second in the 500 free in her best time of
the season (5:48.13). Stephanie Cowen lowered her season-best in
the 100 breast in a time of 1:49.89. In addition, the 400 free
relay team of Hamor, Ashley Garyn, Marie Caron and Hitchens took
second in 4:12.58.
On the men's side, Jason Kinder took top honors in the 100 back
(58.55) and in the 200 free in 1:52.20, Hood's fastest time of the
year. Matt Haynes was Hood's second individual winner in the 50
free (23.36) and Stu Kaufman captured first place in the 500 free
(5:40.95). Matt Caron finished second in the 200 individual medley
(2:17.52) and third in the 100 free (54.12).
The Blazers close out the 2006-07 regular season with a pair of
home meets next week. On Wednesday, the Blazers host Frostburg
State at 4 p.m. before entertaining Penn State Altoona Saturday at
1 p.m. at the Hood Aquatics Center.
