Falcons Nip Blazers in Season Opener

FREDERICK, Md.--The visiting Fairmont State University Falcons (1-0) edged the Hood College women's swim team (0-1) by a 71-65 margin Saturday in a nonconference meet at the Huntsinger Aquatic Center.

Kristen Kucharski, Aleece Groome and Taryn Scafide each won an individual event in the season-opening meet for the Blazers. Kucharski bested Alyson Wareing in the 200 free with a time of 2:19.54. Groome and Scafide, competing in their first races for the blue and gray, garnered nine points apiece for their efforts in the 200 individual medley and the 100 back, respectively.

Erica Hamor took second in the 1000 free (12:48.71) and the 100 fly (1:11.73) while newcomer Andrea Haines finished third in the 50 free (33.74) and second in the 100 breast (1:29.15).

The Blazers' next meet is slated for Friday, Nov. 6, at York College (Pa.). The University of Mary Washington Eagles will also participate in the Capital Athletic Conference tri-meet which begins at 6 p.m.
