FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's swim team downed visiting Arcadia 167-92 in the Blazers' home opener of the season.
Hood started the match off on a high note in the 200 medley relay. One week after setting the school record, the team swam the second fastest time in the record books. Shannon McHale (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge), Shannon Welch (Henderson, Nev./Las Vegas Academy of the Arts), Lauren Fogarty (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and Sydney Langer (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) turned in a 1:57.65 for the first of Hood's 10 event victories of the afternoon.
Welch notched another win on the afternoon when she edged teammate Erin Honeycutt (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) in the 100 breaststroke. Welch swam a 1:17.37, just 0.23 faster than Honeycutt.
The duo would go 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke, as well. Welch captured a third win with her time of 2:47.02, while Honeycutt placed second in 2:49.14.
Fogarty scored a win in the 200 butterfly in 2:18.05 and added a 2:19.31 to win the 200 individual medley. Her third victory of the day led Hood to a 1-2-3 finish in the IM. Honeycutt was second in 2:28.66, just 0.06 ahead of Welch.
McHale touched the wall in 1:03.11 in the 100 backstroke for her second win of the meet. Her third victory of the meet was in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.17.
Caitlin Fay (Henrico, Va./Mills E. Godwin) won the 200 and 500 freestyle events, and 200 backstroke. She won the 200 free with a time of 2:06.23 and took the 500 in 5:38.29. Fay finished the backstroke in 2:18 32.
Anne Lessard (Natick, Mass./Natick) swam a 58.33 in the 100 freestyle to finish second. She was the runner up in the 50 free with a time of 26.60.
Hood improved to 2-1 with the win.
The Blazers are idle before hosting Lycoming on November 2.
