FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's tennis team defeated visiting Cabrini 7-2 to give first-year Blazer head coach Luis Cotto his first career victory.
The two teams split the two contested doubles matches. Vladislav Sluchenkov (Vladivostok, Russia / Garmonia) and Tyler Shuck (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) notched an 8-2 win over Hugo Ballon and Joe Pacifico at second doubles. Hood won No. 3 doubles via forfeit.
Sluchenkov picked up his second victory of the afternoon, defeating Alija Broadnax at first singles. He won the first set 6-3 before Broadnax tied it up with a 7-5 victory in the second set. Sluchenkov scored a 10-5 win in the super tie-breaker to take the match.
At second singles, Shuck won a tie-breaker in the first set 7-3 to win 7-6, but Ballon won 6-0, 10-6 in the second set and super tie-breaker for the win.
Alex Sexton (Mesa, Ariz. / Mesa) picked up his third straight singles victory, winning at fourth singles. He won a tie-breaker, 7-5, over Pacifico in the first set and went on to win 7-6, 7-5.
Raymond Rivera (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Mike Halbherr at fifth singles. Joshua Sexton (Mesa, Ariz. / Mesa) won via injury with the match tied 3-3 in the first set against Anthony DiCicco at third singles. Hood accepted a forfeit at sixth singles for the seventh point.
The Blazers will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Susquehann on September 27.
