WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Hood College men's tennis team picked up the win in its first Commonwealth Conference match of the year with a 9-0 sweep of Lycoming.
The Blazers took all three doubles points to take command early. Brothers Alex Sexton (Mesa, Ariz. / Mesa) and Joshua Sexton (Mesa, Ariz. / Mesa) combined for an 8-3 win at first doubles over Joe Amento and Bryce Jones. At second doubles, Vladislav Sluchenkov (Vladivostok, Russia / Garmonia) and Philip Roedig (Farmingdale, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist) scored an 8-2 victory against the duo of Joe Rudderow and Patrick Herrington. Raymond Rivera (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) and Joseph Benton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) were 8-4 winners over Zachary High and Zackary Collevechio at third doubles.
Hood won five of the six singles flights in straight sets. Only Roedig's 7-5, 3-6, 10-4 win at fourth singles against Evan Bennetch went longer.
Joshua Sexton did not drop a game at No. 2 singles against Amento, 6-0, 6-0. Benton only dropped one game in the second set to Son Phan to win 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles.
Alex Sexton was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Rudderow at third singles. Rivera picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Alhoun Lundy at sixth singles.
The match at first singles was the second closest of the day. Sluchenkov won the first set easily, 6-1, but Jones kept it closer in the second set. The Hood senior won 6-4 in the second set to score the point for the Blazers.
Hood hosts York (Pa.) in a non-conference match on March 31 at 3:30 p.m.
