Men's Swimming Wins Big on Senior Day

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College Blazers won 13 of the day's 14 events to defeat the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley 182-56 on Senior Day.

BJ Daisey and Chris Gardner led the way for the Blazers, each winning three events. Daisey won the both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, along with the 100 butterfly. Gardner took the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley.

Before the meet, the Blazers honored Daisey, Gardner, Cameron Rogers, Lucas Mestas-Nunez, Victor Muleki and Zach Miller for their contributions to the program.

How it Happened

  • Daisey had a strong day in the breaststroke events taking wins in the 100 and 200. He swam the winning time in the 100 of 1:03.53, with teammate Gabriel Hernandez-Paese coming in second in 1:06.34. Daisey won the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.79. He also won the 100 butterfly in 55.93.
  • Gardner controlled the backstroke, winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke. He was victorious in the 100 in 54.28, before dominating the field in the 200. He won that event by almost 15 seconds in 2:00.96. Gardner took the 200 IM in 2:08.80.
  • Cameron Rogers continued his dominance in the distance events with wins in the 500 and 1000 free, extending his win streak in dual, tri and quad meets in the 1000 to 24. He set the pace in the 1000 winning by 43 seconds in 10:21.87. He came back in the 500 with a 21 second lead in 4:57.67. Finishing second and third in the 500 were Max Riedel (5:18.67) and Drew Wilson (5:21.16). 
  • Mestas-Nunez took the 200 free in 1:56.00. Hood dominated the event with Max Riedel in second (1:57.98) and Miller in third (2:00.01). Mestas-Nunez paced another large contingent of Blazers in the 50 free, where Hood took the top four places. Mestas-Nunez won in 22.84 and was followed by, in order, Muleki (23.11), Miller (24.09) and Wilson (24.91). 
  • Matthew Ball won the 200 butterfly in 2:10.62.
  • The Blazers won both relays. The 200 medley relay of Gardner, Daisey, Muleki and Hernandez-Paese picked up a win in 1:42.24, with a margin of victory over 10 seconds.
  • The two teams saved the day's most exciting race for last in the 200 free relay, with Hood winning by just 0.08 seconds. The foursome of Mestas-Nunez, Miller, Rogers, and Muleki out-reached the Flying Dutchmen at the wall by 0.08 seconds in 1:33.12.

Notes

  • The win brings Hood to 7-5.
  • Lebanon Valley is now 2-8.
