Emily Maerz

One of the best tennis players in school history, Emily Maerz '13 returned to Hood College as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams in January 2023. She previously coached the Blazer women from 2014-16.

In her first tenure on the sidelines at Hood, both of her squads reached the conference semifinals. The 2015-16 unit posted the most team wins by a Hood squad in five years, including a 5-2 mark in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth. She coached Olivia Hosch to two all-conference nods and Michelle Shedd was also named to the All-MAC Commonwealth team in 2015-16. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named the Blazers as an All-Academic team both seasons, while five players were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. 

After leaving Hood, Maerz was the head coach of the Division II Shippensburg University women from 2016-18. In her first season, she doubled the Raiders' win total from the previous season. 

Maerz returned to college coaching as the head coach for both teams at Mount Aloysius from 2021-22. Her Fall 2022 teams had already matched the win total from the entire 2021-22 season. 

As a player, Maerz finished third all-time in Blazer history with 45 singles wins, 43 doubles victories and 88 total wins from 2009-13. Her 36 career wins at No. 1 singles are a school record. As a senior, she was named to the All-Commonwealth Conference First Team and was All-Capital Athletic Conference during her freshman and junior years. Maerz was the 2013 recipient of the President's Award at Hood's senior student-athlete banquet, given to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their Hood College careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership. She was also a three-year team captain.

Maerz served as the Tennis Coordinator for the City of Frederick, Md. She has worked with the West Winds Tennis and Fitness Center in addition to doing summer camps and tennis lessons at Villages of Urbana. Previously, she coached the USTA Juniors based in Frederick. She was also the head coach at Baldwin High School in Pennsylvania in  

A two-sport student-athlete, Maerz was also a four-year member of the women's basketball program at Hood and finished her career fourth in 3-point field goals made. A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society, she graduated from Hood with a degree in political science in 2013.

Maerz graduated from Hood with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 2013. She later earned both a Master of Science in sports administration/kinesiology from McDaniel College and a paralegal certificate from Duquesne University in 2020.
