Jeremy Mattoon was named Hood's head men's lacrosse coach andfitness center coordinator on August 2, 2010.
In 2012, the Blazers narrowly missed earning the sixth and finalspot in the Capital Athletic Conference playoffs. After defeatingthe Marymount University Saints in the league finale at home, theBlazers, Saints and Wesley College Wolverines found themselves in athree-way tie for sixth place, forcing a coin-flip to decide thefinal playoff participant; Marymount emerged from the tiebreakingcoin-flip as the sixth seed. The Blazers would go on to finish the2012 season with a 4-13 overall mark and a 2-6 league record.
Mattoon led Hood to an overall record of 8-9 and three historicmilestones in 2011. He was rewarded for his efforts by the CapitalAthletic Conference head coaches who selected him as the league'sco-coach of the year.
The Blazers registered their first-ever CAC victory when Hooddefeated Wesley, 8-7 on the road in overtime, on March 26. Thetriumph ended a string of 31 straight conference setbacks datingback to the 2006-07 season, Hood's first year in the league.
Then on April 12, the Blazers knocked off new CAC memberFrostburg State University, 8-5 at home, to clinch the program'sfirst-ever CAC tournament berth. The Blazers would go on to earnthe No. 6 seed in the playoffs with a 3-5 CAC mark and faced-offagainst third-seeded University of Mary Washington inFredericksburg.
Despite falling in the first round of the playoffs to theEagles, the Blazers went on to defeat Gwynedd-Mercy College, 7-3,in their home finale on April 19 for the program's eighth win, asingle-season record for Hood men's lacrosse. The eight wins in2011 also eclipse the program's total from the previous six yearscombined.
The Blazers set numerous statistical records as well, includingface-off winning percentage, save percentage and fewest goalsallowed since joining the CAC.
Including Wesley and Frostburg, Hood defeated five teams for thefirst time in program history in 2011 (St. Joseph's College (Me.),Centenary College (N.J.) and Marymount were the others).
Originally from Corning, N.Y., Mattoon served as the first-evermen's lacrosse mentor at Husson University in Maine when the Eaglesadded men's lacrosse as a varsity sport in spring 2009. Mattoonalso served as the director of the Swan Fitness Center at theUniversity.
In Husson's inaugural season, Mattoon guided the Eagles to a 4-9record, which included victories over Anna Maria and North AtlanticConference foes Lyndon State, St. Joseph's (Maine) and GreenMountain.
In 2010, the Eagles made significant strides, compiling a recordof 10-8 and earning the right to host an NAC playoff game.Mattoon's top offensive threat, sophomore attack Ben Landry, ledNCAA Division III in goals per game (4.44) and listed third in thenation in scoring (5.33 points per game). Landry, along withteammate and defenseman Matt Tabler, earned all-NAC accolades fortheir standout seasons. Two of Mattoon's freshmen, goalkeeper TylerQuinn and attack Mitch Heaps, garnered NAC rookie of the weekhonors during the 2010 season, in addition to Landry's three NACplayer of the week nods.
Prior to starting the Husson lacrosse program, Mattoon served asthe head coach of the boys varsity lacrosse team at Saint John'sCatholic Prep here in Frederick from 2006-08. In 2008, Mattoon andthe Vikings posted a perfect 13-0 record and advanced to the MIAA"C" conference championship game. Following this stellar season,Mattoon was tabbed Frederick County Coach of the Year. Mattoon alsotaught four different history classes during his stint at SaintJohn's.
Mattoon began his head coaching career overseas with the HTHCHamburg Warriors in Hamburg, Germany in July 2002. The toutedWarriors advanced to the title game of the Northern German LacrosseLeague twice. Mattoon claimed two more coach of the yeardistinctions for building the Warriors into a Europeanpowerhouse.
Mattoon is a 2006 graduate of the University of Maryland,University College with a bachelor's degree in history. He went onto earn a master's degree in secondary education from McDanielCollege in May 2010.
Mattoon, who became the sixth head coach in Blazer men'slacrosse history, took over a Hood squad that posted a record of6-11 in its sixth season as a varsity program in 2010. Mattooninherited the head coaching reigns from Curt Foxx, who resigned inJune 2010 after two seasons as the Blazers' head coach to take asimilar position at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark.
Mattoon is the proud father of a son, Alexander.
