Sandra Abel

Sandra Abel enters her fourth season as an assistant coach forthe women’s lacrosse team in 2012-13.

Hailing from Urbana High School in Monrovia, Md., Abel graduatedfrom Rutgers University in 2009 with a degree in women and genderstudies with a minor in psychology.

A goalkeeper at Rutgers, she started all 16 games between thepipes last season and racked up 144 saves for a .460 savepercentage while logging 955:32 minutes. She went 7-9 on the seasonand owned a 10.24 goals-against average, fourth in the BigEast.

Abel was named to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second teamher junior year and finished the season with career-highs in saves(163), save percentage (.477) and wins (seven).

Abel also finished second in the BIG EAST and 19th nationally insave percentage and saves per game. Abel recorded 10 or more savesin 10 games including five straight. She was named the Big EastDefensive Player of the Week on March 3, 2008 and was voted to the2008 Preseason all-Big East team.

In 2007, Abel played in 16 games, starting 11, and finished with a4-0 record. She ranked seventh in the conference in goals-againstaverage (10.32) and saves per game (4.19) and ranked eighth with a.435 save percentage. She logged a team-high 506 minutes during theseason.

A starter in 11 of the 14 games she appeared in as a freshman,Abel finished the season seventh overall in the league in savepercentage (.463). She averaged a team-best 11.53 goals-againstaverage and finished with a record of 6-5.

Abel started out as an attacker at Urbana before making the switchto netminder as a sophomore. A three-time all-county performer andtwo-time team captain for the Hawks, she guided the squad to anappearance in the state championship her senior year.

Abel obtained a master’s degree in human sciences from Hoodin May 2011 and currently serves as an education/treatmentassistant at the Jefferson School.
