Santo Provenzano and Dennis Tressler combined to score 53 points and the Hood College men's basketball team pulled away from Chestnut Hill College in the final minute to win 85-80 on Monday night.
The Blazers trailed 80-79 with 58 seconds remaining, but Provenzano put Hood ahead 81-80 with a layup off a nice pass from Sean Robine. Tressler and Robine then each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to clinch the hard-fought victory.
The win puts Hood back at .500 in their inaugural season at 11-11 and clinches the season sweep of the Griffins, who fall to 12-12.
Provenzano led all scorers with 29 points—he has now scored 20 or more points in seven of last eight games and leads the Blazers averaging 21.4 points per game—and also pulled down 10 boards. Tressler contributed 24 points, 20 of which came in the second half and had eight rebounds. Robine followed with 12 points and David Wilson narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Isaac Greer led the Griffins with 22 points and Ryan Albany had 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists.
For the game, Hood shot 53.4 percent while holding Chestnut Hill to 45.9 percent shooting. The Blazers also held a huge edge on the boards, 41-24.
Both teams handled the ball well with Chestnut Hill committing just 12 turnovers to Hood's 15.
Hood will look to go over .500 on the year in its next game Saturday against the University of North Carolina's JV team. Tip-off in the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. is set for 10 a.m.
