BALTIMORE, Md. — Regulation play wasn't enough and neither was one overtime session, but in the second extra period, the Hood College men's basketball team turned away Villa Julie College to win 87-82 on Thursday night.
It was the Blazers' second straight overtime game and their first overtime win in four tries this season as they get back to .500 in their inaugural season at 9-9. They have now also won five of their past seven games—their best stretch of the season—and finish their four-game road trip at 3-1.
Santo Provenzano led Hood with 26 points and Sean Robine added a season-high 19 points. Dennis Tressler chipped in 16 points and Wade Henninger led the Mustangs with 23 points.
Robine's biggest basket of the night was a 3-pointer late in regulation that forced the first overtime and Brian Morris equaled Robine's heroics with a 3-pointer of his own at the end of the first overtime.
In the final session, the Blazers turned up their defense and got a few transition buckets to give them a cushion and they clinched the win by hitting their free throws down the stretch.
Hood overcame a severe 57-42 rebounding deficit with timely shooting. The Blazers shot 43.8 percent for the game and hit nine 3-pointers while holding the Mustangs to 42.1 percent shooting.
The Blazers get back in action Saturday when they host Strayer University at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
