GRANTHAM, Pa.--Zach Wiernicki scored 20 points and grabbed nine
rebounds while Jared Yoder added 13 points and 13 rebounds as
Messiah downed Hood 67-43 in the first annual Messiah College
Invitational Friday night.
Messiah (6-2) advances to Saturday's championship game at 3 p.m.
and will face Cabrini, a 119-84 winner over Penn Tech. Hood (3-5)
and Penn Tech meet in the consolation contest at 1 p.m.
Hood shot just 7-of-28 (25 percent) from the floor in the first
half, but was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line and
trailed 35-26 at the break.
Messiah pulled away in the second half behind a 13-of-31 effort
(41.9 percent) from the field.
Hood's shooting woes continued after the break, as the Blazers hit
just 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from the floor and 4-of-11 from the
free-throw line.
Junior Santo Provenzano led Hood with 20 points but was limited to
21 minutes due to foul trouble.
Freshman Tim Abercrombie added eight points and three steals, while
sophomore Jesse Gutekunst finished with six points, five rebounds
and two blocks.
