FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College saw its season-high three-game
winning streak come to an end with an 87-74 loss to Villa Julie
Saturday night at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
Junior Santo Provenzano scored a game-high 24 points and sophomore
Jesse Gutekunst added 21 points, five rebounds and four blocks for
Hood (7-9), but it wasn't enough to overcome four Mustang players
who scored in double digits.
Phillip Williams led Villa Julie (7-5) with 23 points and Anthony
Fitzgerald had 18 points and a game-high 21 rebounds, including 15
on the defensive end. Steve Segears had 19 points and five assists,
while Kerry Dugan added 12 points.
Hood, which trailed 38-29 at halftime, pulled to within 52-49 on a
3-pointer by junior Darnell Edmonds with 12:53 left.
However, the Blazer bench was issued a technical foul following a
personal foul on freshman Tim Abercrombie, and Williams hit all
four free throws to spark a 10-0 Mustang run.
Hood got no closer than nine points the rest of the way and
suffered just its fourth loss in 20 all-time home games.
The Blazers return to action Monday when they host Gallaudet at 7
p.m.
