FREDERICK, Md.--Matt Eby stole an inbounds pass at half court
and drained a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Gallaudet
an improbable 75-72 win over Hood in men's basketball action Monday
night at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
Hood (7-10) led by as many as 18, 47-29, with 16:59 to play before
Gallaudet went on an 11-2 run over the next two minutes. The
Blazers pushed their lead to 55-42 at the midway point of the
second half, but the Bison (8-6) stormed back to within four on a
3-pointer by Jon Mowl with 7:37 to play.
After Mowl sank two free throws and a 3-pointer to tie the game at
60, Hood continually beat the Bison press and fed the ball to
sophomore Jesse Gutekunst for three straight layups that gave the
hosts a 67-61 advantage with just over three minutes remaining.
Gutekunst added another jumper and a pair of free throws as Hood
took a 71-66 lead with 41 seconds to play.
However, Eby sank a 3 with 31 seconds left and Luther Weeden tied
it on another shot from behind the arc with 3.9 seconds remaining
to set up the final play.
Gutekunst, who was held to just two scoreless minutes in the first
half after picking up two fouls, scored all of his team-high 21
points in the second half and added nine rebounds.
Junior Santo Provenzano had 16 points, six assist and four
rebounds, and freshman Tim Abercrombie had 16 points, five rebounds
and four assists.
Robert Haney, Jr., led Gallaudet with 21 points and eight rebounds,
while Eby added 17 points. Mowl finished with 15 rebounds, seven
assists and six rebounds.
After committing 15 turnovers that led to 20 Hood points in the
first half, the Bison gave the ball away just once after the
intermission.
The Blazers return to action Thursday when they host Maryland Bible
College at 7 p.m.
