Hood Scores Historic Victory Over Gallaudet, 77-64

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's basketball team earned an historic victory Wednesday evening at Thomas Johnson High School by knocking off Gallaudet University, 77-64, for the program's first-ever Capital Athletic Conference win.

Four Blazers reached double figures as Hood used an impressive second-half surge to overcome a five-point halftime deficit and improve to 5-1, 1-0 CAC on the season. Gallaudet drops to 1-5, 0-1 CAC.

Hood found itself on the short end of the halftime score for the first time this season (37-32). But the Blazers emerged out of the lockerroom with renewed intensity, reeling off 17 unanswered points to assume a 49-37 lead within the first 4:37.

But over the next five minutes, the Bison outscored the Blazers 10-3 to draw within five, 52-47, at the midway point of the second half. Hood then used back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore Ryan Junghans and senior Darnell Edmonds and a fast-break layup by Junghans to push the lead back to 11. Gallaudet would get no closer the rest of the way.

Junghans finished with a game-high 22 points including 10-of-11 from the foul line while junior Jesse Gutekunst registered his third consecutive double-double with 18 points and 14 boards. Senior Sean Robine and sophomore Anthony Bennett netted 10 points apiece while Edmonds chipped in five points, two assists and a career-high seven steals.

The Blazers shot a blistering 72.2 percent from the field (13-18) and nailed 16-of-20 from the line in the second half while limiting the Bison to just over 38 percent shooting on the night.

Hood continues CAC play Saturday at Mary Washington at 2 p.m.
