FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Tim Abercrombie scored a career-high 23
points to lead Hood College to a 76-60 win over visiting Penn State
Altoona in the Blazers' regular-season finale Tuesday night at Gov.
Thomas Johnson High School.
The Blazers improved to 14-11 on the year and set a school record
for victories in a single season, eclipsing the former mark of 13
set in the program's inaugural year of 2003-04.
Hood is under consideration for the annual independent tournament
for NCAA Division III schools hosted by Lincoln University Feb.
24-25.
The Blazers are also in the hunt for a bid to the Eastern College
Athletic Conference tournament.
A sluggish first half in which the teams combined to shoot just
18-of-52 (34.6 percent) from the floor ended with Penn State
Altoona holding a slight 27-26 lead.
Hood managed to hit only 8-of-26 (30.8) of its shots but stayed
close thanks to 10 points from Abercrombie and a 7-of-10 effort
from the free-throw line.
Leading 42-39 with just over 13 minutes remaining, the Blazers took
control with a 10-0 that was fueled by eight straight free
throws.
Penn State Altoona (5-18), which handed Hood a 68-67 overtime
defeat earlier in the season, pulled to within 57-50 with four
minutes left, but Abercrombie hit two free throws and a jumper to
spark another 10-0 run that sealed the record-setting victory.
The Blazers made 10-of-16 shots from the floor and 29-of-34
attempts from the free-throw line in the second half.
Provenzano finished with 19 points thanks in large part to an
11-of-15 performance at the charity stripe. Junior Darnell Edmonds
had 11 points, five steals and three assists, while sophomore Jesse
Gutekunst added 11 points, a game-high nine rebounds, five steals
and two blocks.
Colin Geiger and Tyler Franklin led Penn State Altoona with 16
points apiece. Barry Minemyer added 12.
