FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's basketball team dropped
a 64-51 decision to the visiting Chatham College Cougars Saturday
in Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference contest at Gov. Thomas
Johnson High School.
The Blazers fall to 1-13 overall, 1-3 in the AWCC, while the
Cougars improve to 5-11, 3-1 in the AWCC.
After falling behind early, the Blazers turned a 10-6 deficit
into an 11-10 lead on a three-pointer by Whitney Schultheis and a
jumper by Jessica Nease. But the Cougars used a 14-4 run over a
span of 6:02 to take their largest lead of the half, 24-15, with
under seven minutes to go in the stanza.
Hood went on a spurt of its own, using a 10-1 run to tie the
score at 25-25 on a pair of free throws by Jennifer Willison at the
3:11 mark. But the Blazers were unable to get over the hump and
Chatham took a 34-31 lead into the lockerroom.
Hood started well in the second half, regaining a 39-38 lead on
another Willison foul shot, but the Cougars took the lead for good
on a jumper by Brittany Brown at the 14:58 mark. The Blazers pulled
to within three with 7:31 remaining (47-44), but connected on just
2-of-9 from the floor the rest of the way.
Willison led the Blazers with 14 points and grabbed nine
rebounds, while Sara Hartlaub, Brianna Raithel and Sara Wastler
chipped in eight points apiece. In her first action of the season,
Schultheis played 21 minutes and finished with six points, four
assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Chatham's Erica Bilski led all scorers with 21 points while
Libby Soeder had 17. Allason Holt recorded a double-double with 10
