PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Senior Dana Shook registered a team-high 14
points including four three-pointers to lead the visiting Hood
College women's basketball team to a crucial 47-42 victory over
Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference rival Chatham College Saturday
at the Athletic and Fitness Center.
Hood (5-17, 4-5 AWCC) kept its playoff hopes alive with the
triumph and improves to 21-1 all-time against the second-place
Cougars (8-16, 5-4 AWCC). The Blazers must defeat Trinity
University Monday to stay in the hunt for an AWCC tournament berth.
The Blazers found themselves in a 12-4 hole within the first
five minutes but quickly responded with 13-2 spurt to tie the score
at 14-14 with 7:08 to go in the half. Four different players scored
and Shook drained a pair of treys in the run, the second of which
gave the Blazers their first lead of the game, 17-14 at the 6:10
mark. Hood took a slim 19-18 edge at halftime.
A three-pointer by Sara Wastler gave Hood its largest lead of
the game, 29-22, with 16:08 to go, but the Cougars rallied to tie
it up at 33-33 on a triple by Erica Bilski, the AWCC leader in
three-point field goals. But that would be Bilskiýs lone
three-pointer of the contest as the Blazers limited her to only
four attempts from distance on the day.
Hood took the lead for good on Shook's fourth three of the
afternoon at the 6:04 mark and Wastler nailed a pair of foul shots
in the closing seconds to ice the victory.
Freshman Jennifer Willison registered her eighth double-double
of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three
steals. Classmate Sara Hartlaub tallied eight points and pulled
down eight boards while Wastler finished with nine points, six
rebounds and three assists.
Bilski finished with 12 points in the losing cause while Allason
Holt chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.
The Blazers wrap up the regular season Monday hosting Trinity
University at Gambrill Gymnasium. Hood will also recognize its two
seniors, Tamara Maggard and Dana Shook, before the contest.
