ANNVILLE, Va.--The Hood College men's basketball team (3-1)
captured the 2008 Rinso Marquette Tournament hosted by Lebanon
Valley College by defeating the host Dutchmen, 78-70, in the title
game Saturday afternoon.
Hood trailed for the first 7:16 of the contest until a jumper by
J'Air Brady put the Blazers up 10-9 at the 12:44 mark. Hood led by
as many as seven but the Dutchmen rallied to tie the score at 27-27
with just under two minutes to play. The teams headed into the
lockerroom deadlocked at 31-31.
Hood regained the upperhand on a triple by Tim Abercrombie on
the Blazers' first possession of the second half. The Blazers
maintained the advantage until the 10:02 mark when a pair of free
throws by Zach Hoover gave LVC a 52-50 edge.
Later with the score knotted at 57-57 with 5:15 left in
regulation, the Blazers scored 11 unanswered points and took
advantage of a pair of Dutchmen turnovers. Consecutive buckets by
Brady and Ryan Junghans and three straight long-range baskets from
Garrett Williams, Junghans and Brady proved to be the decisive
spurt the Blazers would need as the Dutchmen drew no closer than
eight the rest of the way.
Junghans scored a game-high 19 points and was selected as the
tournament's most valuable player. Brady and Williams finished with
16 points apiece while Abercrombie registered seven points, nine
rebounds and a season-high eight assists to earn all-tournament
recognition as well.
Hood also won the Rinso Marquette Tournament in 2006 and
Junghans became the first non-LVC player to earn a pair of
all-tournament accolades, having also earned the distinction in
2006.
The Blazers, winners of three straight, host Shenandoah
University in their first home game of the season Tuesday at Gov.
Thomas Johnson High School. The game will be the second of a
doubleheader with the Blazer women, who host Wilson College at 6
p.m. The men's game is slated for an 8 p.m. tip.
