SALISBURY, Md.--Sophomore center Chris McGrew nailed a pair of
free throws with 0.1 seconds remaining to give the Salisbury
University Sea Gulls (11-14, 8-8 CAC) a narrow 75-73 Capital
Athletic Conference victory over the Hood College men's basketball
team (9-16, 6-10 CAC) Saturday in the regular season finale.
With the loss, the Blazers fall just short of qualifying for the
six-team CAC tournament, which begins Tuesday. Hood finished in
seventh place, one game behind sixth-place York College (Pa.).
Hood held the advantage for most of the first half and led by as
many as 10, 30-20 with 5:06 to play, before the Sea Gulls carved
into the Blazer lead in the closing minutes. Salisbury scored the
final six points of the stanza to close to within 35-32 at the
break.
The Blazers and Sea Gulls traded baskets for the first 7:10 of
the contest before Hood snapped a 45-45 tie with a 9-3 spurt to
assume a seven-point lead (55-48) with 10:35 to play in regulation.
Hood's largest lead of the period swelled to eight, 74-62, after a
bucket by Tyler Snoots at the 3:22 mark. But the Sea Gulls wouldn't
go away and rallied to tie the score at 73-73 on a Devin Jones
jumper with 55 seconds left.
Snoots missed a jumper at the other end and Jones came down with
the carom and the Sea Gulls called timeout with 23 ticks left.
Salisbury worked the ball around to its leading scorer, Jones, but
his three-pointer with two seconds left was off the mark. However
McGrew was there for the offensive board and was fouled on the way
down, sending him to the line for a 1-and-1 opportunity.
Hood burned two timeouts to try and ice McGrew, who was a 69.2
percent foul shooter on the season. But McGrew was unphased and hit
both free throws to give Salisbury its first lead since the 14:25
mark of the second half. After both Salisbury and Hood called
successive timeouts, Hood's Tim Abercrombie launched a potential
game-winning three but it rimmed out, and Salisbury escaped with
the victory.
Snoots matched his career-high with 18 points and blocked three
shots in 21 minutes off the bench. J'Air Brady contributed 12
points, including a pair of three-pointers, and Chris Leggett
finished with 10 points and also rejected three shots.
In the final games of their Hood careers, Jeff Willison tallied
six points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes of work, while
Abercrombie chipped in six points, four rebounds, two assists and a
steal in 33 minutes.
