FREDERICK, Md.--Goucher College senior forward Julien Greco
netted his first score of the season in the 70th minute which
proved to be the game-winner as the Gophers (1-0) nipped the Hood
College Blazers (0-1), 1-0, in the season opener for both schools
Wednesday at Thomas Athletic Field.
A day after the Blazer field hockey team engaged in Hood's
inaugural game on the new state-of-the-art turf field against
Capital Athletic Conference foe Salisbury University, the men's
soccer team got their turn this afternoon hosting former CAC rival
Goucher. Five years ago today, these two programs squared off in
Hood's first-ever intercollegiate men's soccer match in Towson.
Ironically, the final score of that 2004 contest was also 1-0 in
favor of the Gophers.
The two teams combined for just five first-half shots, three by
Goucher and two by Hood. But in the second half, Goucher fired 10
shots to Hood's two, and finally snapped a scoreless tie when Jay
Berger and Dan Brody set up Greco, who flicked the pass from
Berger passed Hood keeper Shawn Fernholz on the right side of the
net.
Fernholz rejected four Gopher attempts on the afternoon while
Justin Holbrook posted the shutout and made a pair of stops for the
visitors.
Hood next travels to LaRoche College Saturday for a 5 p.m.
nonconference game.
