FREDERICK, Md.--Senior forward Michael Johnson tallied two goals
and assisted on a third to power the visiting University of Mary
Washington Eagles (6-3, 2-0 CAC) to a 7-0 Capital Athletic
Conference victory over the Hood College men's soccer team (1-6,
0-1 CAC) Wednesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Eagles put up a five-spot in the first half, including three
straight goals in a span of 1:19. Johnson's two scores, his first
and second of the season, came just 39 seconds apart. Smith Norton,
T.L. Tutor and John Tarley also found the back of the net for UMW,
which outshot the Blazers 19-3 in the first period.
Mary Washington continued to pepper the Blazer net in the second
half, posting 14 shots to Hood's one. Matt Lamb netted his first
goal of the season in the 57th minute and Tony Rodriguez also
cashed in off a pass from Norton with 4:20 remaining for the final
margin.
Hood keepers Shawn Fernholz and William Lane combined for eight
saves on the day while the Eagle goalkeeping trio of Emmett
Rutkowski, Alec Constantine and Matt Eby was not tested with a
Blazer shot on goal.
Hood is back in action Saturday hosting CAC rival Marymount
University in the first game of a soccer doubleheader at Thomas
Athletic Field at 1 p.m.
