Snoots Nets Career-High 23 in 77-60 Setback to SMCM

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md.--Senior Tyler Snoots poured in a game- and career-high 23 points but it was not enough as the Hood College men's basketball team (2-1) fell to the No. 11 St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks (2-0), 77-60, Friday in the second round of the Pride of Maryland Tournament at Stevenson University.

Already the two-time defending tournament champions, St. Mary's scored the first 11 points of the ballgame and led wire-to-wire en route to advancing to its third consecutive title matchup. The Seahawks will take on Frostburg State University for the crown, while the Blazers will battle the host Stevenson Mustangs in the third-place game Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Hood trimmed the deficit to three, 27-24, on a conventional three-point play by junior Brenden Straughn with 7:19 to go in the opening half. But the Seahawks outscored the Blazers 19-6 the rest of the way, which included eight of the final 10 points of the period, and took a 46-30 lead into the break.

The Seahawks would not surrender their double-figure cushion in the second half as the Blazers suffered their sixth straight defeat to their Capital Athletic Conference nemesis.

Snoots knocked down 8-of-15 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the stripe to eclipse his previous scoring high of 21 points set against Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 29, 2009. First-year Cameron Cook reached double digits for the third straight game with 11 points while Straughn and junior Herb Bowen contributed 10 points apiece.

Sam Burum led four Seahawks in double figures with 16 points while Christian MacAuley finished with eight points and a tournament-record eight blocks.

The Blazers are 1-0 against Stevenson in POM tournament action, registering an 83-72 win in the 2006 second round game.
