EMMITSBURG, Md.--Freshman Justin Stone recorded game-highs of 22
points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double to lead
the Hood College men's basketball team (13-9, 8-5 CAC) to a 59-57
win over Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet University
(4-14, 0-12 CAC) Tuesday at Mount St. Mary's University's Knott
Arena.
Due to the closure of Fort Detrick and in anticipation of
another significant snow fall this afternoon and evening, the two
teams made the journey to Mount St. Mary's for the early tip times
at the Knott Arena.
Hood cashed in on its first three field goals of the game and
owned a 10-4 lead at the 13:09 mark. But from there, the Blazers
went cold from the field and endured a stretch of nearly eight
minutes without a basket. Meanwhile, Gallaudet reeled off 16
straight markers to assume a double-figure advantage, capped by a
Tony Tatum triple with 5:53 to go in the period. The Blazers
trailed by 10 (32-22) at intermission.
Coming out of the locker room, Hood wasted no time chipping into
the deficit, outscoring the Bison 12-2 over the first 6:27 to cut
the lead to one, 35-34. Reco Siler and Stone keyed the spurt by
combining for 10 of Hood's points during that stretch. Stone also
threw down a fast-break one-handed jam in the run.
Brenden Straughn gave the Blazers the lead for good with his
only made jumper of the day at the 11:15 mark. The Hood lead
ballooned to as many as nine but the Bison wouldn't back down.
After narrowing the gap to two on a pair of free throws by Tatum
with 1:58 left, Tyler Snoots answered at the other end with an
old-fashioned three-point play. GU's Jocus Houston found Tatum on
the perimeter for another trey to make it 56-54 with 1:13 left, and
Hood called timeout.
Out of the break, Stone connected on a layup with 44 ticks left
to push the lead back to four. Houston misfired on a trey at the
other end and Jackson was whistled for a foul on Stone who went to
the line for a one-and-one. Stone missed the front end and Tatum
snared the rebound. Tatum then fed Weedon at the top of the key who
swished Gallaudet's fifth three-pointer of the game and GU called
timeout down 58-57 with 26 seconds remaining in regulation.
After a pair of Hood timeouts, Tatum fouled J'Air Brady to put
the Blazers in the double bonus. Brady hit the first clutch foul
shot and GU called timeout. Out of the stoppage, Brady misfired on
his second attempt and McMillan corralled the carom. After getting
the ball across the timeline, Gallaudet spent another timeout with
four seconds showing on the clock.
Luther Weedon launched a potential go-ahead three pointer with
time winding down which was off the mark, but Weedon followed his
shot and came up with the rebound. He quickly tried to hoist
another shot but the referees determined that Weedon's follow came
after the final buzzer, and the Blazers escaped with the victory.
The win ended a three-game slide for the Blazers as Hood
completed the regular season sweep of the Bison.
Stone, who earned his seventh start of the season, nailed
8-of-11 from the field and 6-of-9 from the stripe in his 33 minutes
of work. Snoots netted 18 points, including an impressive 10-of-11
from the line, while Siler added 12.
Danny Kelly paced the Bison with 15 points, 12 in the first
half, while Jackson contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, three
assists and six steals.
Hood's next game is slated for Thursday at the University of
Mary Washington, weather permitting. Please check www.hoodathletics.com for the
