Blazers Bested by Stevenson, 2-0

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md.—The Hood College men's soccer team (3-10-2, 0-8 Commonwealth) was defeated by Stevenson University (8-9-1, 3-4-1 Commonwealth) 2-0 in Commonwealth action Tuesday night. The scrappy Blazers played resiliently, but were unable to come up away with the road victory.

It was Stevenson's senior night and one of the more special ceremonies you will ever see transpired before the game. Senior Kyle Kauffman of Stevenson was able to start and play in his first collegiate game after serving for four years on Stevenson's staff as a team manager. Kauffman suffers from cerebral palsy and was never able to realize his dream of starting and playing in a collegiate game until Tuesday night. It was a great gesture by both Hood coach Brian Wall and Stevenson coach John Plevyak to allow this to happen and even better that Kauffman was able to get on the field and actually attempt a shot on goal.

On to the game itself, the Blazers came at Stevenson in the first half with three shots on the goal. Anthony Belnomi, Neal Morgan, and David Langan all had shots that tested Mustang goalkeeper Kenneth Hersey, however Hersey was up to the task and turned the shots away.

Stevenson got on the board in the second half with a cross that deflected off a Hood player and found its way into the back of the net. The Mustangs struck again in the 64th minute with a deep cross from the left corner that was headed in by Chris Contino.

Hood goalkeeper Ryan Deuber had a solid game in net, making seven saves on 13 Stevenson shots. Hersey of Stevenson ended with seven saves on nine Blazer attempts. Stevenson held an 8-4 advantage in corners as well.

The Blazers return to action this Saturday when they honor their two seniors on Senior Day. The Blazers take on Lycoming College at 1:30 with the pregame festivities beginning approximately 15 minutes before the game.
