Hood Loses 1-0 in Final Minutes to Widener

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College men's soccer team (3-3-2, 0-1 Commonwealth) was defeated by Widener University (4-5-1, 1-0 Commonwealth) in its first ever game in the MAC conference. Widener scored a late goal that iced the game and had the Blazers looking for answers moving forward.

The game was certainly an eventful one as there were seven cards handed out, including a red card that was shown to Widener in the 42nd minute. The Blazers could not take advantage of the man advantage throughout the second half, as Widener continued to push bodies forward and show ambition to attack. The attacking play paid off in the 88th minute as Widener's Troy Czapor tallied his third goal of the year to end Hood's chance of gaining some much needed home points. Czapor caught the Hood defense off guard when he received a ball in a dangerous spot outside the 18. Czapor took a touch to his right foot and took an off balanced shot that found its way into the side netting as disbelief was bestowed on Blazer Nation. The Blazers never got another shot off and fell to 0-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Hood goalkeeper Ryan Deuber had a solid game in net as he accumulated four saves on the afternoon. His counterpart Jakub Valdner made three saves in the game. The Blazers freshmen duo of Gary Higginbothem and Ian Jenkins both had good efforts on the back line.

The Blazers return to conference action this Wednesday night when they hit the road to take on Elizabethtown College at 7 p.m.
