Fontanez Scores Twice in Win at Marymount (Va.)

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. - Hood College's Joey Fontanez (Severna Park, Md. / Chesapeake) turned in his second career two-goal game to lead the Blazers to a 5-2 non-conference victory at Marymount (Va.).

Hood scored twice in a span of 30 seconds early in the first half to take control of the game. Colin Viti (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) opened the scoring with a long shot from the top left of the box to the far post midway through the 15th minute for a 1-0 lead. At the opening of the 16th minute, the Saints tried to clear the ball, but the attempt found Eric Diehl (Gaithersburg, Md. / Damascus), who put Hood on top 2-0 at the intermission.

Marymount (Va.) cut the lead in half shortly after play resumed, when Onar Yousefi converted a free kick from the top of the box in the 51st minute.

The Blazers responded with Fontanez's first goal of the half. In the 61st minute, Hood intercepted a pass and Drew Demich (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick) found Juliano Pillari (Toms River. N.J. / Toms River North), who sent the ball to Fontanez for a 3-1 lead.

The Saints still had life as Akram Bensalem made it a 3-2 game with just over 15 mintues to play, when he raced up the right side of the field in the 75th minute for a goal.

Fontanez put the game out of reach less than five minutes later. Diehl sent a slide pass through the middle to the sophomore who knocked it home to make it 4-2 early in the 80th minute.

Demich capped the scoring in the 87th minute. Mitchell Mattox (Pasadena, Md. / Chesapeake) ripped a hard shot from in close that deflected off the keeper to Demich and the result was a three-goal lead for the Blazers.

The five goals matched Hood's season-high from a win at Mt. Aloysius earlier this fall. It was also the most goals scored by the Blazers against the Saints in the series history and gave Hood two wins in the last three meetings between the sides.

In addition to Fontanez's two-goal outburst, Diehl and Demich each had a goal and an assist in the game. The sophomore's first two-goal game came last season against Albright.

Ian McDonald (Elkton, Md. / Northeast) benefitted from the offense, making two saves in net.

Hood took 22 shots in the game, while the Blazer defense limited Marymount to 10.

Logan Cropper started in goal for the Saints and made one save in 30 minutes. Kurt Michaels came on in relief and stopped six shots.

Hood hosts Arcadia in its Commonwealth Conference opener on Saturday, October 5 as part of Homecoming on campus. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
